Lower Secondary Programme

The Lower Secondary Programme is a framework for educational success for students from grades VII to VIII. It builds on the primary stage, and develops children’s knowledge and skills of the three key subject areas, Mathematics, English and Science.

Why Choose a Lower Secondary Programme?

This Curriculum Framework provides a natural progression from primary education through the two years of lower secondary education. It also provides a structure that focuses on what students should be able to do at the end of each stage.

Most importantly it provides excellent preparation for our students who are progressing to IGCSE.

In the Lower Secondary, students are given exposure to question papers similar to the ones they will be taking in IGCSE . These question papers are standardized and marked by our experienced teachers. It provides detailed feedback on students’ strengths and weaknesses in key curriculum areas before they move into the IGCSE Level stage.

Assessment & Teaching Methodology at MCTA Lower Secondary Program:

Our Lower secondary students are expected to participate actively in class, to ask questions, to make presentations, to carry out independent research and also to work collaboratively in teams. Our teachers help the students to develop the skills that will enable them to succeed in this dynamic teaching environment.

The range of strategies that teachers use within a timescale of several lessons ensures that learning is both challenging and enjoyable. In Science, for example, scientific inquiry is the routine accompaniment to teaching-learning process and in Global Perspectives and Geography, students develop research and thinking skills and work together with others collaboratively. They also understand that questioning and evaluation of sources and the acceptance of many perspectives can lead to better interpretation.

Assessment for lower secondary classes is set within a multipurpose and flexible framework. It is a combination of formative and summative assessments.

We provide the students an opportunity to be assessed holistically. Hence, we implement multiple modes of assessment strategies to consider the overall achievements of the child.

Formative Assessment:

This type of assessment supports learning during the learning process. Our Teachers are constantly assessing the child’s understanding through a range of formative assessments targeting various skills. This helps us to check for understanding along the way and also provide feedback to students so they can improve their performance.

Summative Assessment:

We believe that periodically it is essential to evaluate the student’s assimilation of knowledge and understanding based on pedagogical philosophy. A comprehensive progress report is sent to parents at the end of every term. These reports detail academic accomplishment and personal development in various activities that our school conducts throughout the academic year.

At MCTA we run two Lower secondary programs concurrently. We have Super International and International classes provided for the students based on their choice of progression.

In the Super International class, the level of English curriculum is one level higher than the International class. Students in the super international class are assigned more projects and activities as per the need of the individual subject curriculum.

However, the subjects taught in both the Super International and International programs are the same which is listed below.

What is after secondary 2?

The International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) is a two-year course of study available to students at MCTA School in classes IX and X (Sec 3 and Sec 4)

The Lower Secondary Classes at MCTA School serves as a preparatory year designed to meaningfully progress to the courses of study in IGCSE classes.

At MCTA School, students in classes Sec 3 and Sec 4 will normally select a total of five to eight subjects. They will all select subjects of their choice from the following subjects: First Language English, English as a Second Language, Elective Mathematics, Additional Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Accounting, ICT and Chinese. However English either as a first language or as a second language is compulsory.

In addition, students must also choose from a range of sporting and non-sporting activities. Such co-curricular experiences encourage them to develop a well-rounded personality.
